Climatic trends in continental shelf waters off Ghana and in the Gulf of Guinea, 1963-1992 ArchiMer
Koranteng, Ka; Mcglade, Jm.
Using time series analyses, some physical parameters of the continental shelf waters of the Gulf of Guinea were examined. Analysis of coastal sea surface temperatures from Ghana and Ivory Coast, and offshore sea surface temperatures from the Gulf of Guinea clearly shows spatial and inter-annual patterns of cooling in coastal waters of West Africa. The behaviour of the decomposed trend of coastal and offshore sea surface temperatures, sub-surface: temperature measured at 100 m depth off Ghana and salinity showed that the observational period (1963-1992) could be divided into three climatic periods: the period before 1972, from 1972 to 1982, and the period after 1982. In the first period, sea surface temperature at both coastal and offshore areas and bottom...

Fluctuations à long terme du thon rouge: validité, origines et conséquences ArchiMer
Ravier, Christelle.
Describe and gain understanding on fluctuations in animal population over time and space is a central goal of population ecology. This is also crucial to ensure the sustainable management of exploited resources, particularly those with complex population dynamics such as the bluefin tuna. The goal of this work is to collect bluefin tuna catches from the ancestral Mediterranean and Atlantic trap fisheries to (i) characterise long-term fluctuations in bluefin tuna population migrating in the Mediterranean, (ii) analyse their causes et (iii) assess their implications for fisheries management. The bluefin tuna main biological and ecological characteristics are first detailed. Then, the first part presents the trap fishery, and the process of collect and...

Implications de la couleur du bruit environnemental sur la variabilité des stocks halieutiques exploités ArchiMer
Rouyer, Tristan.
The origin of fish stocks variability is a key question in fisheries science. The exploitation indeed has an important effect in terms of biomass reduction, but environmental forcing is of central interest as it affects numerous key biological processes. Recent theoretical results have shown that the nature of the environmental fluctuations, the environmental noise, has important ecological consequences on populations and particularly on their fluctuations. In addition the effects of exploitation, that are not a simple removal of individuals but also profoundly modifies the demography, the structure and the trophic interactions of fish stocks, can interact with environmental effects. Through an extensive analysis of time series we aim at understanding the...

Long-term series in ichthyoplankton: Sole and sprat at French coast of the North Sea from 1975 to 1994 ArchiMer
Woehrling, Daniel; Le Fevre-lehoerff, Geneviève.
The sampling of eggs and larvae of sole and sprat at Gravelines (French part of the North Sea coast) since 1975 has produced a long-term series showing major interannual changes, Comparison of the results obtained on two species, one benthic and the other one pelagic, suggests some events affecting the environment that are also revealed by the holoplanktonic (appendicularia, chaetognatha) and meroplanktonic (cirripeda larvae) compartment. This Study attempts also to distinguish general variations from more closely species-related fluctuations.

Time series analysis of interrupted long-term data set (1961-1991) of zooplankton abundance in Gulf of Maine (northern Atlantic, USA) ArchiMer
Licandro, P; Conversi, A; Ibanez, F; Jossi, J.
The main interannual and seasonal signals have been extracted from a multi-decadal data set of zooplankton collected with the Continuous Plankton Recorder in the Gulf of Maine, from January 1961 to December 1991. The monthly abundances of seven species or genera of copepods representing the dominant biomass in the area were considered. The presence of a large consecutive gap (35 months) prevented the use of statistical methods for the prediction of missing data. The eigen-vector filtering (EVF) method was then used on the original time series, while retaining the missing values. For each zooplankton taxon, two principal modes of variability (F-1 and F-2) were extracted, representing the interannual and seasonal variations, respectively. Results of EVF...
